How Canada Came to Be

I attended the Provincial Arts Camp and took a lot of pictures! I thought I would share some of my favourites with you! Enjoy!

The camp started right away with some tie dye... to see how mine turned out stay tuned!

 Yummy cookies made by Cookie!

Yoga was offered every other morning, I think the girls who went really enjoyed it!

My beautiful duty chart! I was very pleased with myself :)

The campers are very focused on learning their lines for the play.

This origami lantern took sooo long to do but I was pleased with myself for completing it.

The wild raspberries are starting to come out!

Another great tie dye job

 This shirt was so colourful!

This is my t-shirt, it turned out okay.

This looked like a galaxy shirt to me- it looks so cool!

Another cool one!

One more really cool shirt!

The result of rinsing out my shirt... my hands were blue for about three days!

It was like a Chinese laundry of tie dye shirts!

Painting on canvas, it was cool to see what the girls came up with.

 My painting...

There was a quote/inspiration wall set up of sorts the girls could add to as the week went on.

My contribution to the quote wall.

 Cookie's amazing rainbow cake!

The water was cold... the girls were a little hesitant to get in, but they did eventually!

I love this picture! These two easily became the best of friends at camp.

Swimming at the lake!

There were so many duck families out on the lake and they were even battling... it was a bit scary but all the little duckies were okay!

The little baby ducks were so cute!

Heather the lifeguard and I hanging out during quiet time.

The Lewis patrol! What a great group of girls!

A local radio station has a thing every summer called the Trucksicle that travels around giving out free popsicles. One of the leaders texted in to see if they would come out to camp and they did!Captain Jeff has no idea what is coming up that hill... 65 excited Girl Guides!

You would think the girls had never had a popsicle before... they were so excited!

The Trucksicle came at the PERFECT time!!

All ready for the first full run through of the play.

This is the finale of their play, a very patriotic O Canada!

More swimming in the sun! The girls were definitely more into it the second time around!

Does anyone know what this is? It is on one of the jugs that sat at the bottom of the lake for three days holding the rope. I am very interested to find out!
 Butterfly out by the lake

Cookie aka the best cook ever! wanted to make sure that the girls' hands were clean so he dolloped whipped cream all over them! On their hands, arms, elbows... it was awesome!

Yummy ice cream sundae- you can never have too many sprinkles! :)

The Chapel at Tangletrees is my second favourite place in the entire world (1st is Disneyland) and I thought it was perfect to have Guides Own up there. The girls were quite reflective and relaxed- the best way to be at camp!

Guides Own up at the Chapel

My favourite time of day at camp, campfire! We finished our last night with a formal campfire, the girls had fun and I loved hearing 65 voices sing On My Honour (chills!)

I always love the look of all the packed luggage at the end of camp... is that weird?

Thanks for taking a look at this long post! I have some pretty cool stuff coming up soon so stay tuned!

Archives Adventures!

A few days ago the Provincial Guide office had all of their archived materials out for the public to see. Since I am both a Girl Guide and history buff I had to go! The pictures are pretty self explanatory, but I thought it would be cool to share some of the old uniforms, badges, and cookie boxes with you! Does anyone remember any of these things? Let me know!

Guide Uniform 1925-1935 and Leader Uniform from 1964-1970

 Ranger Uniform 1976-1988

Guide Uniform 1988-2002 (I had this uniform in the pants and striped shirt version)

Brownie Uniform 1972-1979

Guide Uniform 1950-1963 (I think, I can't read the tag...)

 Awards, Certificates and Badges

 Leader Uniform 1987-present and Commissioner's Uniform 1925-1950's

Old Certificates

 Flag Toppers

Cookie Boxes (hopefully the cookies aren't in there!)

More cookies

My favourite part, the AGP table! I had never seen the original mace so I thought that was really cool!

 Comparison of the two maces

And again...

 Original proclamation to start AGP

Whistles, pens, and booklets oh my!

There were a few girls there to model some of the uniforms, it was cool to see them in real life!

Girls' World Forum: One Year Later

It is hard to believe that it has already been a full year since I attended the Girls' World Forum in Chicago as the Canadian chaperone.

I participated in a webinar today as a follow up for the Take Action projects that the delegates were to complete after the event. I took a few screenshots of the polls that were taken throughout the webinar and I will share them with you now.

It was very interesting to see what the other delegates had to say about the Forum and even though participation was limited I enjoyed hearing from the few who shared about their projects. I am hoping that there will be more opportunities to hear abut the Take Action Projects that are happening around the world.

One of the things that was talked about was a survey you can take online. The description on the website is "The United Nations and partners want to hear from YOU! MY World is a global survey asking you to choose your priorities for a better world. Results will be shared with world leaders in setting the next global development agenda. Tell us about the world you want, because your voice matters." The link is below and I hope that you will take it!

Overall I had a pretty good day reminiscing on the Girls' World Forum and I really hope that there are more events like this around the world for girls and young women to open their eyes to the world around them and make a change!

Make it Monday: SWAPS!

I am back again with another round of SWAPS. I am helping out on staff for a week-long arts camp this summer and we were asked to make  SWAPS to share with the girls attending. I like to put some effort into my SWAPS so they have some meaning behind them. I love astronomy (my dad is an astronomer) and my Guiding name is Starshine so I thought this would be the perfect SWAP for me.

I got the original idea from this project I saw on Pinterest and I adapted it for my SWAPS.

I love to get all of my supplies ready and organized before I start a project because I love the idea of seeing how a bunch of different pieces come together to make a project. Plus I needed a photo for Twitter... :)

I started by using my star punch to get fifty stars. Luckily this didn't take as long as I thought it would so I was happy. I chose to punch the stars before I laminated them because I needed to write on the stars and it would be too hard to punch the exact spot where the words were.

Because the circles did not have any writing on them I chose to laminate a full piece of paper and then punch once, this also saved a lot of time!

I only used four sheets of paper to get fifty circles and I was pleased with how they turned out. There were a few that did not turn out because I had the punch at the wrong angle, but overall it was fairly simple.

I also punched purple stars to say the constellation name. I just liked the look of the punched paper, especially when it was all done. I only needed one piece of paper to punch the fifty stars.

I used the pink stars to write "Provincial Arts Camp 2013" on the front and wrote "From Shannon" on the back as a memory of who and where the SWAP is from.

I used the purple stars to write the name of the constellation to attach to the SWAP. I chose six easily recognizable constellations and wrote what the shape was. In case you cannot read it I chose Cassiopeia (Queen), Ursa Major (Big Dipper), Leo (Lion), Orion (The Hunter), Pisces (Fish), Canis Major (Dog).

I used these super tiny brads to attach the pink and purple stars to the black constellation circle. They are really small and I thought they were so cute. :)

Luckily all of the stars fit on one laminating page so it was easy to lay them out and cut them apart for the SWAPS. I have a small laminator that I use quite a bit and I would definitely recommend it to any crafter!

I wanted to practice the constellations before I did them for sure on the real SWAPS so I used the messed up circles and a sharpie to copy the constellation based on pictures from the Internet (and then confirmed with my dad...). I know that they are not completely scientifically accurate, but it is just a craft.

I used glow in the dark paint to put on the dots. I did eight of each constellation and two extra to get fifty and it took me about twenty minutes to do all of them. I am a speed demon at one in the morning! :) That paint is VERY glowy and I was happy with the results. I definitely recommend this paint!

Here is the finished product! I am overall pretty pleased with them and I attached them to my Girl Guide for Change business card so the girls would have my contact information.

This was a fun project and from start to finish it only took about three hours (much less time than the friendship bracelets I made last year...)

Thanks for reading!

Time to Relax: June in Review

June was actually a very relaxed month for me Guiding-wise.

The only two Guiding things I had this month were our year end district meeting and the Camping Adviser's Workshop. Here are a few more pictures from the day (because two blog posts about the same day are not enough...)

Some more pond-dipping, a perfect rainy day activity!

I love the lake at all times of the year, but early summer is awesome!

I also turned 23 near the end of June, which was kind of exciting because I am pretty proud of what I have accomplished so far in my life.

One of the things that was on my mind this month was the horrible flooding that happened in Southern Alberta. I have a few friends who live in High River and were hit pretty bad with the flooding. If you would like to help out with the relief efforts in Calgary, High River, and the rest of Southern Alberta that was affected please click here.

Sorry this is such a short post but it I just kind of relaxed this month. I am on summer break now so I will have more time to post! I do not want to be on the computer all summer but I will try and get more posts up. :)
